Red Lines in the Legal Profession: When Ethics Leads the Way

In theory, the practice of law allows each professional to freely choose the cases they want to take on. However, in practice, many firms establish red lines that go beyond legal requirements and enter the realm of professional ethics for lawyers.

At Estradé Law Firm, we believe that good legal practice is not measured solely by knowledge of the law, but also by consistency with personal and professional values.

The freedom to choose cases… and the responsibility it entails

Every lawyer has the right to accept any type of case, from commercial litigation to complex criminal matters. But that freedom also carries the responsibility to act with objectivity and professionalism.

In our firm, we have decided to set clear boundaries for certain types of offenses:

1. Terrorism-related crimes

Defending victims is compatible with our vision of justice. However, representing individuals allegedly involved in acts of terrorism would conflict with our principles.

2. Crimes involving violence against children or the elderly

Protecting the most vulnerable is a core principle of our philosophy. For this reason, we do not take on the defense of individuals accused of violence against minors or elderly persons.

A matter of objectivity and professionalism

Beyond personal convictions, these decisions are based on a key fact: the impossibility of maintaining the objectivity required to provide the highest level of professional defense in such cases.

Lawyering is not just about applying the law. It also involves having the ability to act with integrity, aligning professional practice with the values that define us as lawyers and as individuals.

The importance of a coherent professional practice

Being clear about our red lines allows us to ensure that each client receives a committed, honest, and high-quality defense. Above all, it reminds us that the law is as much an exercise of social responsibility as it is a profession.
